Here, Space of Memory is an audiovisual installation developed by SPECS Research Group of Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, in collaboration with the Bergen-Belsen Memorial/Lower Saxony Memorials in Germany.

Here, Space of Memory is an audiovisual installation developed by SPECS – Synthetic, Perceptive, Emotive and Cognitive Systems group, in collaboration with the Bergen-Belsen MemorialLower Saxony Memorials in Germany. The audiovisual installation was part of the activities to mark the 60th anniversary of the Memorial’s inauguration. Afterward, the memorial installed a more permanent setup inside the documentation center to facilitate expanded use by, for instance, guided groups.

The audiovisual installation brings us into an immediate relation to the historical site today and in the past. It presents a 3D reconstruction of the former concentration camp bringing people to imagine what the camp once was. The aim was to build an application to optimize the acquisition, storage, and presentation of data of historical relevance, such as the Holocaust. Here, Space of Memory helped to find an interactive narrative structure that allows users to understand the importance of the Holocaust, to identify with its victims and to assign meaning with respect to their own existence.

SPECS has developed this installation in the framework of the European FP7 project CEEDS – Collective Experience of Empathic Data Systems. It was the first manifestation of what subsequently would be implemented in a tablet application. The whole project integrates multiple and different sides and workflows, like historical research, 3D animation, media production and interaction design, user experience, usability and recollection tests.
